My Rome is burnt : Patidar Reservation Agitation

<This is a quick post>

And it happened again. Happened in the name of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It took 13 long years to build this modern Rome – my dear Gujarat. It took a few hours and a few vicious words of so-called leaders to burn it.

The day was 25th day of August 2015. With the demand of reservation for the ‘Patidar’ community, a truly mega-rally was conducted in Ahmedabad. Unfortunately, the so-called leader of this revolutionary rally was led by a naive person named Hardik Patel. This person delivered a laughable but poisonous speech revealing his political vendetta (Nitish Kumar, Arvind Kejriwal and Chandrababu Naidu could be heard). What remarkable is – the unfortunate support of his community.

Until that day, every citizen residing in the state had kept mum, neither resisting nor supporting. But whatever happened on 25th August is unacceptable. The 21-22 years old Hardik Patel openly showed his immaturity and micro distant vision (actually vision word shouldn’t be used for there was no vision at all). His speech (read it as: blabbering) was provocative. Full of Arvind Kejriwal’s element- anarchism. He, himself knows that there is no way that the community can be included in the reservation quota. But, for the political mileage, a person can do anything.

Everybody knows the legal and standard procedure to apply for the reservation quota, these guys have followed none.

Hardik Patel

In the name of Hardik Patel’s detention, the people charged the policemen.

That is how it all started. The irresponsible Hardik appeals people for ‘peace’ now. What kind of peace are you talking about Hardik? Aren’t you the same guy who had blabbered: “If we will be given the reservation with love, we will accept otherwise we know how to snatch it.” These poisonous words show his poisonous mental state. No sensible person can relate his words with peace. Peaceful options were available but were intentionally not explored. A better and wise leader was missed.

This is what happens when people choose to follow an anarchist.

Interstellar: Dimensions of cinema

interstellar posterIt is not everyday when you watch a science-fiction movie and you jump off the seat because you find that the movie doesn’t contain some bunch of crazy, fictional scientific theories and doesn’t take you to a world of some apocalypse. So, why in the first place, would you jump off the seat if all these things in the story-line are absent? Isn’t a science fiction movie meant to be the way it has been described? Since the age of beginning of sci-fi movies, the stories have revolved around aliens, viruses, artificial intelligence, some extraordinary medicines etc. But this movie has nothing of it and that is what makes the audience jump off the seat.

This movie is a cult one. A golden scale for the future sci-fi movie-makers.

People love stories and what movies do? Materialization. On-screen materialization of the stories. That is what this man Christopher Nolan has done. He has achieved this by hard work, the hard work that  can be witnessed throughout every frame of this movie. The hard work of the Interstellar team can be witnessed in the scene of the movie actually created on a life-size set of tesserect as shown in the image here:

The movie has doubtlessly extraordinary VFX and music by none other than Hans Zimmer. One important thing about this movie is lack of any heavy weight science terms. No out of the box crazy science theories. Pure physics (nearly pure,he he!). Well, any film of Nolan encompasses amazing dialogues and so this one too, let’s have a look at some of the most meaningful metaphoric dialogues from the movie:

“It’s like we’ve forgotten who we are, Donald. Explorers, pioneers.. not caretakers!”

“We’ll find a way professor, we always have..” ~ “Driven by the unshakable faith that the Earth is ours”

“When you become a parent, one thing becomes really clear and that is that you want to make sure your children feel safe.”

"Time will run different for us?"

“Time will run different for us?”

“I’m drawn across the universe to someone I haven’t seen in a decade who I know is probably dead. Love is the one thing we’re capable of perceiving that transcends the dimensions of time and space. May be we should trust that even if we can’t understand it yet!”

“Pray you never learn just how good it can be to see another face.”

“A machine doesn’t improvise well because you can’t program a fear of death. Our survival instinct is our single greatest source of inspiration.”

“Newton’s third law.The only way humans have ever figured out of getting somewhere is to leave something behind.”

“No parent should have to watch their own child die.”

Have your headphones ready for this thrilling soundtrack by Zimmer:

This is not a movie. It is a depiction of human spirit. Spirit that never fades away. The spirit which has led us humans to this pinnacle. May such of this spirit keeps Christopher Nolan blessed and motivated.

Christopher Nolan is father of four children, how does he find time to make such a masterpiece? <wink>

‘The Mahabharata Secret’ : A Freshly Written Review

The Mahabharata Secret Cover PageAfter a long time, I got to read a fiction which is carefully mixed up with the Indian mythology and history. It was released in 2013. The writer Christopher C. Doyle has shown some fresh writing skills. Now, let’s talk about the plot of the story.

The Genre of the Book is: Historical Fiction + Indian Mythology + Suspense

The story revolves around the Asoka the Great- one of the most remarkable kings of Indian history and the present day guy named- Vijay Singh. In 244 BC Asoka discovered a secret from the time of Mahabharata Battle. He believed that the secret was so dangerous to be revealed. He tried to protect that secret and somehow he succeeded, until the Taliban of Afghanistan destructed the statues of Buddhas of Bamiyan. This event becomes a milestone in the story line of The Mahabharata Secret.

Buddha of Bamiyan were destructed by Taliban in 2001

If you like to read about the secret societies of the world, the mythology of cultures or history, then this is your cup of tea.

The important thing about this story is that you don’t need to actually know much Indian mythology or for that sake even Indian history. The story is very simplified and enriching. Those who have no interest in history or mythology, they may be attracted to learn more about the same.

The writing style is fresh as already mentioned, but the disappointing part is the description of scenes or objects. When an excellent writer writes a description about a scene, the scene pops out of the text in front of the reader effortlessly. The reader’s mind creates an entire impression of that scene which lasts forever. This is something where the writer needs to work hard. Of course, these skills can be developed over a period of time.

The wheel of Dharma- which is mentioned innumerable times in the story

Talking about the element of suspense and thriller, the story has got a convincing suspense but lacks thrill. The beauty of this story lies in the fact that the modern science is used to give an element of possible science fiction touch. As the writer is inspired by writers like  Jules Verne, H G Wells, Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein, it is no surprise that he has the grip on the scientific part of the story. You actually start thinking about the advancements of science in real world.

During reading this book, it may remind you of the Hollywood movie ‘National Treasure’. Because that movie has fantastically woven the American History with the fiction and such an attempt can be seen in Christopher’s work.

Follow the path of truth and you will find your way through any illusion.” – From The Mahabharata Secret by Christopher C. Doyle

“Little sparks”

Something from memory lane!

Science Express

One fine afternoon, my colleague and friend Shubhra ran into Joy of Science (JOS) Laboratory where basic science experiments are carried out. She was accompanying an average looking boy, must be in his teens. Shubhra approached me and started whispering.

She said “Hey Bhagyesh! Do you have time?” and I replied, “Yes, tell me what’s the matter?”

Pointing to the boy, she continued: “This boy is slow-learner; his classmates were teasing him while I was disseminating coach content in the train. So I brought him to the JOS lab, I thought you can explain him with personal attention here. We may be able to boost his confident. If needed, we can encourage him with the participation certificate of our JOS Lab.”

Being supportive, I reassured, “Sure, don’t worry. As it is there are not a lot of students at this time, we can create some spark here!”

I called the…

Transcendence (2014) : Much Hyped, Less Satisfactory | Comparison with ‘Her’ (2013)

What does Transcendence mean?

Define Transcendence Google Search

The movie Transcendence released in 2014 was expected to be something out of the box with the famous actor Johny Depp (as Will Caster). It is a story about how a scientist, working on artificial intelligence, makes a breakthrough by uploading his consciousness to the software and internet in unusual circumstances. Johny Depp’s acting is doubtlessly good but what sucks is the plot and the old-wine kind of story. The story is enhanced by better visual effects, that’s the only plus point. Any Sci-Fi fan can predict the story. Rebecca Hall (as Evelyn Caster) worked good but not satisfactory. The only person who has laid his efforts in his character is no one else but Morgan Freeman (as Joseph Tagger).

Transcendence reminds of the 2013 Sci-Fi Oscar winner ‘Her’. Both of them being based on the plot of artificial intelligence, comparison is natural. At every step of the Transcendence, the story of ‘Her’ blinks in the mind. ‘Her’ is definitely much better than this movie. ‘Her’ is better in story, acting and direction. ‘Her’ has a curiosity triggering story-telling, unlike ‘Transcendence’. While watching Transcendence there comes a point where you want to discontinue the movie and forget whatever you watched!

Let’s see a quick comparison of ‘Transcendence’ & ‘Her’ in terms of budget and profit.

Transcendence (2014) Her (2013)
Budget (Estimated) $100MM $23MM
Gross (Worldwide) $56MM $42MM
Awards 1 win & 3 nominations Won 1 Oscar. Another 63 wins & 73 nominations

See the difference?

Even IMDB has rated ‘Transcendence’ 6.4 and ‘Her’ 8.1 !

What is the moral of the failure of Transcendence? : If you don’t use much VFX, it’s fine, but never compromise with the integrity and creativity of the plot. People have been watching VFX since a long time, it’s not a new thing anymore, what matters is the story.

By the way, those who are disappointed by watching Transcendence, watch ‘Her’ today!
