What parenthood feels like?

Umm, being an unmarried person, I don’t know what it feels like being a parent.

But,I got some parent-like feelings during my current research project. I thought, I should share with you readers.

I basically work with the bacteria in the laboratory.

Bacteria take just about 30 minutes to divide in two!

We prepare special media on which the bacteria feed and grow.

We have to maintain the bacteria. We have to take care that the source of food for bacteria doesn’t exhaust. We have to provide special environment for them to grow.

In other words, what we basically do is nurturing of our baby bacteria.

Last week, some of our bacteria died of exhaustion of food source.

This is where the feeling comes into the picture. We feel that we have looked after them so much, we have cared for them, we don’t want to lose them.

The contrary part is that we are experimenting with them for the welfare of the human beings. but let’s omit that part.

The feeling of “I’ve cared for them” is too strong to resist.

Everyday or every week, after reaching laboratory  the first step is to check if the bacteria are okay or not. We see them very often. They have become part of our life.

So,I really think that this one experience is not enough to assume parenthood feelings. But,it surely gives some fractions of parenthood feelings.

Four things I feel parents have : Care, Constant care, Patience, Affection (I’ve had the first three of them for bacteria!)

Spark:

“I think that the best thing we can do for our children is to allow them to do things for themselves, allow them to be strong, allow them to experience life on their own terms, allow them to take the subway…let them be better people, let them believe more in themselves.”
